The Light Factory Sixth Juried Annuale winners have been announced!

Our Juror, Dr. Kathleen V. Jameson, President & CEO of the Mint Museum of Art, had the daunting task of sifting through 110 entries before selecting the six finalists. Since Dr. Jameson was not told where any of the entrants were from, it is exciting to see that North Carolina (and the South) has dominated the field.

Wired (Student Art Exchange)

Charlotte’s youth today faces an evolving universe of communication and technology. With the explosion of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Skype and other social media outlets, hours are spent in front of the computer or chatting with the world through a hand-held device. Information spreads rapidly and reaches the greater population with influence and immediacy. Technology is used every day, in the classroom, at home, to navigate, to research and to connect friends and family across miles and time zones. Technology keeps the world in constant connectivity.

Students at Rocky River High School and Renaissance School at Olympic High School were invited to explore technology as it relates to their personal lives through layered photographic collages and experimental film narratives. The work produced displays insight into the powerful role technology and the internet play in the daily experience of Charlotte’s teens.

Special thanks to The Light Factory’s teaching artists Dorne Pentes and Jennifer Crickenberger; to Mike Realon and Kelli Rembert at Renaissance Olympic; and to Andrew Vinson at Rocky River High School. The Light Factory also wishes to express gratitude to the ASC and NCAC.

Exhibition Dates:
Monday, January 28 - Sunday, May 19, 2013
The Light Factory's Knight Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 7, 2013, 6-8pm

Social networking has become an important part of many people’s lives. The internet has opened the door for anyone to meet and connect with millions of people. It also gives us the opportunity to gather and share first-hand information about anything and everything. Although most of us have been taught that we shouldn’t say anything that we didn’t want printed in a national newspaper, people continue to send their personal information into cyberspace without any idea of what might happen to it. Connected There but Not Always Here examines the effect technology has had on human relationships through the most fashionable networking outlets: facebook, blogging, twitter, and interactive video.

Connected There but Not Always Here features the work of Dina Litovsky, Gabriela Herman, Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman, and Celine Latulipe, Berto Gonzalez, and Annabel Manning.
