THE LIGHT FACTORY ANNOUNCES SUMMER CAMPS FOR 2010

Camps in photography and filmmaking include Clay Animation, Special Needs

 

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Light Factory announces the 2010 roster of summer camps.  The Light Factory is one of only four museums in the country that celebrates both mediums of photography and film which means that campers have the unique opportunity to express themselves using the most powerful mediums of our time.  To learn more about The Light Factory or to register for camps, log onto www.lightfactory.org.

 

The Light Factory offers week-long, half-day camps in all aspects of photography and filmmaking for rising third through fifth graders. All camps take place at The Light Factory, located at 345 N. College Street inside Spirit Square.  In addition to standard favorites like Documentary Filmmaking, Black-and-White Darkroom Photography, Digital Photo Bookmaking and Photoshop, The Light Factory introduces a Special Needs Filmmaking camp, Fashion & Creative Portraiture Photography, and 2-D and Clay Animation camps taught by professional animator, John Lemmon.

Camp Descriptions

 

Intro to Filmmaking

                Students will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking and produce a one minute film. In this five session class, students learn how to write a script, shoot a short movie and how to edit a “One Minute Movie” using digital editing software. Films are premiered during the last session of class. All friends and family are invited for the viewing.

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                      

 

Documentary Filmmaking

                Put something real on screen. Learn the fundamentals of documentary filmmaking. In this five session class, students learn how to create a short documentary film. As a group students will write, direct, shoot and edit a movie based on real-life subjects. We invite friends and family to the film premiere held during the last session of class.                                                                                            

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                       

 

Intro to 2-D Animation

                Bring characters to life through digital animation own animation or cartoon. Students will be introduced to procedures and techniques for digital animation and editing using Adobe AfterEffects. Students will be guided through their character, background, and storyboard development. Final animations are premiered during the last session of clamp. All friends and family are invited for the viewing.

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                       

 

Clay Animation

                Create an animation movie using clay, digital photography and other 3-dimensional objects. Students work in groups or individually to write an original story, create and design characters, backgrounds and other set materials. For their final presentation students integrate voice over narration and music.  Students need to bring clothes that can get clay on them; Please note the clay may not wash out. Final animations are premiered during the last session of camp. All friends and family are invited for the viewing.

                Costs: $250 members/$270 non-members

 

Advanced Filmmaking

                Put something real on screen. In this advanced course, students with prior knowledge of filmmaking will learn how to take their moviemaking skills to the next level. A professional filmmaker will teach students how to direct, act, edit, write, and shoot their concept. We invite friends and family to the film premiere held during the last session of class.     

Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                      

 

B&W Darkroom Photography

                Become a photographer and see the sights. The fun includes darkroom experience, photo excursions uptown and an introduction to different types of cameras and camera techniques. Students will learn how to make photograms, pinhole cameras, develop prints and create scrapbooks.

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                      

 

Intro to Digital Photography

                Learn basic camera for the digital age. Students learn hands on how to use their digital cameras and how to compose good photographs by doing class assignments and photo excursions. Students will get an introduction to Photoshop.

Advanced B&W Darkroom Photography

                Explore the art of black and white photography. This class will teach you to advance your photography to convey personal concept or moods using creative darkroom and shooting techniques. Creative techniques may include: pinhole photography, layering negatives, alternative processes, toning, altered negatives, shooting with toy cameras, and more. 

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members                                                       

 

Digital Photo Bookmaking

                Publish your photographic series! Students will learn the art of creating a digital photo series and move on to create a soft cover book using Shutterfly software. Class will include journaling, photo excursions, and a trip to Shutterfly where students will see their books being made! Class fees do not include the cost of book. Students/Parents are responsible for providing transportation to Shutterfly the last day of class.

Fashion & Creative Portraiture Photography

                The instructor will share examples of work from fashion photographers who focus on creative portraits. Students will learn to create a unique, memorable portrait using lighting, setting, exposure, composition, focus, and camera angle. In addition, students will learn to manipulate their images in Adobe Photoshop using basic tools. A 35mm film or digital camera is required for this course.

Intro to Photoshop

                This beginning level digital imaging class for teens explores the basics of Photoshop. Students have fun with

image manipulation using basic tools of Photoshop, scanning, layers, and printing. Students will enjoy shooting excursions uptown and group critiques.   

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members     

   

Special Needs Filmmaking Camp

                This class offers students of all abilities a chance to learn the filmmaking process, from conception to finished product.  Each student will write, direct and edit his or her own short film, and have the opportunity to act in other students' films.  This class is appropriate for middle and high school students with learning disabilities, ADHD, Asperger's, autism, Down's syndrome or other disabilities. The class is taught by film maker and experienced special needs instructor and parent Charlie Gale.

                Costs: $195.00/members, $220.00/non-members
