This exhibition is the third in the series titled “In Our Own Backyard”, which celebrates artists who live in or have had some connection to Charlotte. The series was created to highlight the fact that much of the best art available can be found right in our own backyards.

Mitchell Kearney grew up in New Jersey, became a photographer in New York City, and eventually found his way to Charlotte. As a student in the late 1970s at New York’s School of Visual Arts, he studied by day and documented the beginnings of the NYC punk rock scene at CBGB’s, Max’s Kansas City, and other legendary clubs at night. His portraits also appeared on numerous covers of Trouser Press, a progressive New York-based rock music magazine.

Since moving to Charlotte, Kearney has built a very successful commercial photography business. Although he has photographed a variety of subjects throughout his career, his images have just a few things in common: a love for music, the entertainment industry, and the bright lights of the big city.  See more of Mitchell's work on his website: www.mitchellkearney.com.

More about Mitchell

Mitchell Kearney is a passionate observer of life and a lover of all type of artistic and musical expression.

In fact, his affinity for music-making, which began with jazz drum lessons during his early adolescence, predates his interest in photographic image-making by 5 years.

His process of photographing creative individuals has developed into a personal vision, revealing an unparalleled strength of character in all of his subjects.
